Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction Surgery in Scottsdale and Phoenix, AZ

Breast reduction surgery is a surgical procedure to remove excess fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts. Many women suffer painful symptoms caused by the excess weight of their breasts. Unfortunately, non-surgical treatments often provide little or no relief. Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with the body. This usually alleviates the symptoms and discomfort associated with overly large breasts. Studies have shown that the procedure brings about a more proportioned figure, and thus, will likely enhance self-image and boost self-confidence. This in turn frequently increases one’s ability to participate in physical activities.

When to have a Breast Reduction:

The medical term for large breasts is macromastia. Symptomatic macromastia is the condition where large breasts cause pain and other physical problems. The symptoms of macromastia can include: chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain, chest wall pain, headaches, poor posture, shoulder grooving, numbness and tingling of the hands, shortness of breath, rashes under and between the breasts, and poor exercise tolerance. Non-surgical treatments, such as anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDS), only provide temporary relief for moderate symptoms. Conservative treatment rarely provides relief for women with more persistent symptoms. Breast reduction surgery is a highly effective treatment for symptomatic macromastia because it directly addresses the cause of the symptoms. Patient satisfaction rates after breast reduction are very high. It is rare to find a patient who does not experience significant relief of her symptoms after surgery.

Breast Reduction Surgery- Procedure and Recovery:

The specific surgical technique used to reduce the size of your breasts may vary. This is based on the severity of your symptoms, breast composition, and amount of reduction you desire. The surgery is performed through incisions on your breasts with surgical removal of the excess fat, glandular tissue and skin. If your breast enlargement is the result of excess fatty tissue without excess skin, liposuction alone will be required. In either case, patients typically will have surgery under general anesthesia in order to minimize discomfort.

Following breast reduction surgery, your breasts are dressed with gauze and compression wrap. The results of your breast reduction surgery are immediate. During the initial recovery period, your breasts will probably feel tender and sensitive. Over time, any associated swelling will subside and incision lines will fade. It is important to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise in the weeks following the procedure. Most patients are able to resume full activities within six weeks. The final result is generally permanent. However, breast shape and size can change due to aging, weight fluctuations, hormonal factors, and gravity.
