Otoplasty (Ear Pinning) in Scottsdale and Phoenix, AZ
Otoplasty or ear pinning is a cosmetic surgical procedure to correct ear deformities. The procedure addresses the shape, position and proportion of the ear. The goal of an otoplasty is to obtain balance and proportion to the ears and face. The external ear is composed of a delicate, complex cartilaginous framework covered by thin, hairless skin.
When considering “ear pinning” surgery, It is important to choose an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon with otoplasty experience and whom you feel comfortable with.
Who gets Otoplasty?
If protruding ears bother you or your child, you may consider otoplasty surgery. Correction of even minor ear deformities can have profound affect on appearance and self-esteem. Otoplasty can be done once the ears have reached adult size which generally occurs by age five.
You might consider otoplasty if:
- One or both of your ears stick out too far from your head (protruding ears)
- Your ears are larger in proportion in comparison to the rest of your facial features
- You are an adult with dissatisfaction of a previous corrective ear surgery
All candidates for otoplasty should be non-smokers with fully formed ears. It is important to have a positive outlook and realistic goals in mind for ear surgery. What to expect after an Otoplasty:
The results of otoplasty are immediate and permanent. After your bandages are removed, you will immediately notice the change in the appearance of your ears. With the ear permanently positioned closer to the head, surgical scars are either hidden behind the ear or well hidden within the natural creases of the ear.
Discomfort immediately following ear surgery is normal and can be controlled with pain medication. As with most surgical procedures, the area which underwent the procedure will be wrapped thoroughly with bandages. It is important for the bandages to remain intact during the recovery period to ensure the best result from the corrective procedure. Avoid sleeping on your side to keep pressure off the ears. You will receive a full step by step recovery plan following ear surgery that is important to follow to achieve optimal results from the procedure.
